SKYLER D. COHEN

FOR MAYOR OF CRESSKILL

Better Spending. Better Schools. Better Cresskill.

COMMUNITY WELL-BEING: CONNECTING RESOURCES

"I believe the heart of Cresskill is its people. By leveraging existing resources, fostering meaningful connections, and addressing challenges head-on, we can create a community where everyone thrives—without creating expensive new town-funded programs."

By leveraging existing structures and volunteers, we can support residents without creating expensive new town-funded programs. My approach focuses on connecting people to resources, encouraging civic engagement, and nurturing a sense of belonging for all Cresskill residents.

As mayor, I'll focus on practical solutions that address real community needs, including substance abuse prevention, senior services, and programs that bring our diverse community together.

Cresskill community

COMBATING SUBSTANCE ABUSE

Substance abuse affects families across all demographics and socioeconomic backgrounds in our community. My plan focuses on prevention, early intervention, and support for those affected.

  • Revamp Drug Education
Partner with Cresskill schools to move beyond abstract warnings, featuring real, relatable stories showing how easily addiction can start and teaching students actionable steps for helping a friend.
Why it matters: Education needs to emphasize that intervention isn't betrayal, it's potentially life-saving. Making prevention education more relevant and action-oriented can empower young people to make better choices and help their peers.
  • Launch "See Something, Save Someone"
A town-wide initiative focused on empowering residents, especially peers and families, to recognize warning signs and overcome the hesitation to intervene.
Why it matters: We need to equip people to recognize warning signs and provide clear pathways for reporting concerns and accessing help without stigma. Early intervention is key to preventing addiction and saving lives.
  • Expand Local Support & Resources
Increase visibility and access to local/county treatment options, counseling, and family support groups.
Why it matters: Help shouldn't be hard to find. We'll work to destigmatize seeking help and ensure families know where to turn before tragedy strikes. Many resources already exist but aren't well-known or easily accessible.
  • Boost Overdose Prevention
Ensure widespread availability and training for Naloxone (Narcan) among first responders, school personnel, and interested community members.
Why it matters: Immediate intervention saves lives. This practical step addresses the most tragic consequence while we work on long-term prevention and support. Every minute counts in an overdose situation.

CONNECTING RESIDENTS TO RESOURCES

We can support residents without creating expensive new town-funded programs by facilitating access to existing resources and services.

HEALTHCARE RESOURCES

Create a comprehensive directory of healthcare options, including mental health services
Partner with county/state agencies, non-profits, and community/faith-based organizations that provide free or low-cost support
Host regular health fairs connecting residents with service providers

SENIOR SERVICES

Develop dedicated programs for seniors (transportation, recreation) powered by community volunteers
Create a "Senior Buddy" program pairing older residents with volunteer helpers for errands and companionship
Coordinate with Bergen County Senior Services to maximize available resources

Mental Health Support

Bergen County offers numerous mental health resources, including crisis intervention, counseling services, and support groups for families.

Access services through the Bergen County Division of Mental Health Services

Youth Programs

Various after-school activities, mentoring programs, and recreational opportunities are available through local organizations.

Programs offered through Cresskill Recreation Department, local houses of worship, and non-profits

Family Support

Parenting resources, financial assistance programs, and childcare options to support Cresskill families.

Services coordinated through Bergen County Department of Human Services

As mayor, I'll create a centralized information portal on the town website where residents can easily find relevant resources and support services based on their needs.

LEVERAGING VOLUNTEERS

Cresskill is home to talented, compassionate residents who want to give back to their community. My administration will harness this valuable resource through organized volunteer programs.

  • Volunteer Coordination Platform
Establish a volunteer coordination platform to match residents with community service needs effectively.
Why it matters: Many residents want to volunteer but don't know where to start. A centralized platform makes matching volunteers with opportunities that fit their skills and interests easy, maximizing community impact without additional town costs.
  • Library Service Enhancement
Improve library services (e.g., exploring expanded hours) by organizing volunteer support.
Why it matters: Our library is a vital community resource that could offer even more with volunteer assistance. Organizing volunteer involvement can potentially expand hours and services without increasing staffing costs.
  • Youth Internship Program
Establish youth internship programs in partnership with local businesses at minimal town cost.
Why it matters: Internships provide valuable experience for young people while creating connections between businesses and the next generation of workers. These programs build community bonds and develop future leaders at minimal public cost.

CONNECTING CRESSKILL

A strong community is a connected community. My "Connecting Cresskill" initiative will focus on bringing people together across different neighborhoods, generations, and backgrounds.

COMMUNITY EVENTS

Expand community-wide celebrations that bring together residents from all backgrounds
Support neighborhood block parties and gatherings to strengthen local connections
Create intergenerational events pairing seniors with young people for mutual benefit

CIVIC ENGAGEMENT

Launch a "Cresskill Youth Council" to engage young residents in community issues
Create opportunities for meaningful resident input on town decisions
Implement place-based education connecting school curriculum to Cresskill's unique attributes
"We need to see ourselves as one community with shared values and goals, despite our differences. The 'Connecting Cresskill' initiative is about creating spaces and opportunities for meaningful interaction that builds understanding and trust."

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

A healthy environment is essential for community well-being. My administration will focus on preserving and enhancing Cresskill's natural spaces and promoting sustainable practices.

Preserve green spaces through responsible environmental management
Organize community clean-up events and beautification projects
Partner with local environmental groups to enhance natural areas
Support community gardens and local food production
Encourage environmentally friendly practices through education and recognition programs

Community well-being isn't just about programs—it's about connections. As your mayor, I'll work to strengthen the bonds that make Cresskill special, support those in need, and create a community where everyone feels they belong. By leveraging existing resources, harnessing volunteer power, and focusing on what truly matters to residents, we can enhance the quality of life without increasing the tax burden.
